Artist Statement
My work branches in two directions. I create expressive oil paintings and vibrant mixed-media drawings of daily life and our intangible inner worlds.
The first combines nostalgia and honor, elevating memories and loved ones to celebrate their presence in our lives. This art imbues fleeting moments with the power to endure time within collective memory. In the modern world, we all have thousands of photos on our phones at any moment. I love pulling moments from the feed and transforming them with my artist’s eye into a piece of permanent art. By selecting a photo and focusing on a mood with light and color, I can alter the memory and prolong that fleeting moment into an immortalized form. Displaying this art brings that warmth and joy to life every day. I love how this approach to art is accessible to everyone, and we can transform our photo feeds into keepsakes to last generations.
The second area of my work explores more ethereal elements of the human experience. My current project, “Ferocity and Fragility” is a series of vibrant paintings that celebrates our layered nuances. It acknowledges that we can be both kind and fierce, be weak and have grit, be strong and simultaneously broken. I paint visual representations of these warring states within us. As someone who has struggled with life and mental health, I make these images to remind people that we all possess these facets, and that we are not failures for leaning more one way or another on any given day, but that we must draw on our dichotomies as needed to survive and thrive in the world. I hope that these works remind the viewer of the importance of balance.
