Lacee J. Shaw

Lacee is an expressive painter and mixed media artist. Her work focuses on internal human experiences and external moments. She mostly works in oil paints and acrylics, but also experiments with mixed media.
She is a primarily self-taught American artist who grew up in North Carolina. Art and writing were her constants in childhood, which she further pursued in community college before moving to Los Angeles in 2014 to work in the Hollywood entertainment industry. Lacee worked in various graphic design, key art, and art direction capacities for brands such as Netflix, Marvel, Disney, Hallmark, etc.
Lacee and her husband then moved abroad to Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in 2021, living as expats while exploring other cultures and ways of life.
Artist Statement
My work has two areas of focus: one, our intangible inner worlds, and second, prolonging memories.
The first area of my work explores the more ethereal experience of life. My current project, “Ferocity & Fragility,” is a series of vibrant paintings celebrating our layered internal duality. It acknowledges that we can be simultaneously kind and fierce, be weak and have grit, or be strong and broken. I paint these images to remind people that we all possess these facets-- that we are not failures for leaning into one way or another on a given day, but that we must draw on our dichotomies as needed to thrive in this world. I hope these artworks remind the viewer of the importance of balance within these spectrums.
My second area of focus secures memories within art, allowing them to endure time within the collective consciousness of the viewers. The goal is to commemorate experiences and loved ones and celebrate that those moments truly happened. Displaying this art brings those memories to mind every day. This approach to art is accessible to everyone, transforming a barrage of photo feeds into keepsakes.
